Ken Will Morton Get it for only $9.98 at |
Mick's Picks by Mick Skidmore April 26, 2006 In this installment, Mick Skidmore visits the "literate and infectious" rock and roller Ken Will Morton in Athens,GA, goes swimming in the "vibrant and groove-based" Turtle Soup out of New Jersey and gets funky with the "classic soul and funk" of San Francisco’s Mission Players. You coming along for the ride? Athens, GA - Ken Will Morton has been in the music business for the best part of the last decade and a half having played in bands such as Wonderlust and the Indicators among others. After leaving the excellent The Indicators in 2004 he has concentrated on a solo career releasing two albums to date, In Rock and Roll Hands later that year and this week his second album, King Of Coming Around (Fundemental Records). Morton comfortably skirts the borders of Americana rock with subtle nods to Dylan, Mellancamp and Springsteen. He has a great voice that’s on the right side of raspy and his vocal deliveries are passionate without being overbearing. His best songs are literate and boast infectious melodies, witness the buoyant strident folk/rocking "Fit to Be Tied, the opener on the new album. "Make Believe Love" is similar fare with its upbeat jaunty beat and swirling melody. Elsewhere Morton gets into a more roots-based sound as in the almost country-blues of "Oh Lord," and the rolling country-rock of "Movin’ On" and "Friend of Mine." He is backed by a stellar band including John Neff (Drive By Truckers) on pedal steel, drummer Brann Dailor (Mastadon) Billy Homles (Love Tractor) as well as members of his own recently formed rocking band, The Wholly Ghosts. Morton’s music is uncompromising and unpretentious and melds that blue-collar rock and roll attitude with an undiluted roots-rock sensibility. There’s really not a bad cut on this 13-track disc. "Mexican Queen" is one of the standouts as is the bluesy title cut which has an incredibly joyous coda and rocks out nicely with its choral-like vocals.
